News: Global’s summer CanCon schedule; CityTV’s Murdoch Mysteries 4th-season premiere

You saw CTV’s summer schedule.  Now here’s Global’s.  Second verse, same as the first.

  • Global will debut Combat Hospital The Hot Zone Combat Hospital Tuesday, June 21 at 10:00 PM ET/PT, in simulcast with ABC.
  • Rookie Blue‘s second season will begin Thursday, June 23, at 10:00 PM ET/PT.  Rookie Blue is also in simulcast with ABC.
  • The Kennedys will make its Global debut Monday, July 4, at 8:00 PM ET/PT, in the form of eight one-hour episodes.
  • Canada Sings begins Wednesday, August 10, at 9:00 PM ET/PT.
  • NBC Universal, Entertainment One and Global will develop a television adaptation of John Grisham’s The Firm for midseason 2012.  The show is executive produced by Grisham and Lukas Reiter.

A show originally scheduled for Global’s 2010-11 fall schedule, Love Bites, debuts Thursday, June 2 at 10:00 PM ET/PT.  Love Bites is not Canadian, but its history is chequered.  NBC originally developed Love Bites for the 2010-11 fall schedule.  Casting problems, coupled with the departure of creator Cindy Chupack as active showrunner, have seen Love Bites fall from hot prospect to summer filler.

Why do I mention this?  There were six high-profile shows on Global for fall 2010.  They were Outlaw, Hawaii Five-0, Outsourced, Lone Star, Shattered and Love Bites.  Only Hawaii Five-0 has survived the cull so far, with Shattered on the fence.  Global banked on some lame ponies last year.

As for The Firm…really?  Really?  I’m not saying you can’t make a good series out of the John Grisham book, but it’s Entertainment One basing a co-production around adapted source material.  They’ve pulled this stunt with Skins, Haven and Being Human.  That company has no shame.

I wish eOne would adapt material more recent than The Firm, but in the era of remakes, original ideas are the exception.  If eOne turns Manos: The Hands of Fate into a series, I’m going to have to brain someone.

CityTV formally announced Murdoch Mysteries‘ fourth season earlier this month in a press release.  The fourth season will premiere Tuesday, June 7 at 9:00 PM ET/PT, 8:00 PM MT/CT.  The season premiere was originally scheduled for May 10, then May 31.

You might note that TV, Eh? isn’t covering Murdoch Mysteries‘ season premiere.  There is a post on TV, Eh? explaining editor Diane Wild’s decision not to cover the show.  Since I haven’t reviewed Murdoch Mysteries and probably won’t in the future, there is no ban on Murdoch Mysteries at URBMN.

Murdoch Mysteries is the one worthwhile piece of Canadian content on CityTV this summer.  In fact, Murdoch Mysteries is the one first-run drama on CityTV this summer.  Reality shows dot the summer schedule, with The Bachelorette, Extreme Makeover: Weight Loss Edition, America’s Got Talent, Hell’s Kitchen, The Marriage Ref and Bachelor Pad vying for ratings.  If you think that’s a winning lineup, you’re probably drunk.
